My prophetic evolution

My understanding of Bible end-time prophecy has undergone an evolution over the years. I’ve always been interested in the Revelation and what might happen at the end of time. I suppose that this can be traced to a comic book.

When I was young, we had a number of issues of Spire Christian comics. Some of these comic books were adaptations of Christian classics that I read later in life. We had a comic version of “God’s Smuggler” by Brother Andrew, “the Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom, “the Cross and the Switchblade” by David Wilkerson, and “Born Again” by Chuck Colson. There were stories of people like Dallas Cowboy coach Tom Landry, the appropriately named Nate Saint, a missionary bush pilot killed by South American natives, Mitsuo Fuchida, a pilot in the Japanese navy who led the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Johnny Cash. There were also adaptations of Bible stories set in modern (1970s) day. I would love to find some of these for my kids to read today.

The one that is most memorable was an adaptation of Hal Lindsey’s “There’s a New World Coming” (you can read the whole thing online here). For a child, this was an intriguing comic. It was also more than a little scary. Fortunately, I was certain that the end of the world was many years into the future.

I also remember reading a short book based on the Revelation at a young age. I think that it was called “Out of Time” or something similar. A brief Google search didn’t turn up this book, but it was a short prototype of “Tribulation Force.” Again, it was a bit scary for me at the time.

Fast forward about 20 years. Pat Robertson’s “the End of the Age” (1995) was more intriguing than scary. So were the “Left Behind” (1995-2007) novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. It was these books that probably really inspired me to start reading commentaries and guides to Revelation. It was around this time that I remember praying for enlightenment and understanding for these Bible prophecies.

It was slow in coming, but I think that God did lead me to more understanding. Years later, after watching the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War unfold, I began to realize that there were many similarities between radical Muslims and the forces of the Antichrist in the Revelation. I wrote my first blog, “Islam and Revelation,” and created captainkudzu.com on October 26, 2007.

About the same time, my brother told me about a book called “Epicenter” by Joel Rosenberg. Rosenberg made me realize that to understand what is to come, you have to look at other prophecies throughout the Bible. Rosenberg’s book, which centers on Ezekiel 38-39, was the subject of my second blog post.

As I looked through the Bible, I found many more passages that described the end of the world as we know it outside of Revelation. There were passages in Daniel, Joel, Thessalonians, Timothy, and Peter that also addressed eschatology, as the study of the end-times is formally known. Jesus himself talked about the end of the age in the Mount Olivet discourse that is described in three of the four Gospels. I took much of this information and put it into another early blog post, “Signs of the Times.”

Rosenberg’s book made me think about America. America is the best friend that Israel has in the world. Sometimes America seems to be Israel’s only friend. Ezekiel 38-39 describes a multinational coalition that is assembled against Israel and that is subsequently destroyed by divine intervention. The coalition is led by Gog of Magog, a figure that many speculate is Vladimir Putin.

I wondered how a coalition could be assembled against Israel under America’s watch. The U.S. typically vetoes anti-Israel resolutions in the United Nations and aids Israel in its wars. If a coalition were assembled against Israel, wouldn’t the U.S. intervene? There is no indication in the Bible that it does. That leaves two possibilities for the U.S. Either America becomes anti-Israel at some point or it ceases to be a player on the world stage.

About the same time, the authors of “Left Behind” released the nonfiction, “Are We Living in the End-times?” I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in prophecy. It is very readable and has good explanations and descriptions of figures and events in Biblical end-time prophecy. It does focus primarily on the events in The Revelation however.

As the Great Recession deepened and Barack Obama came into office, I began to wonder if the two events were not related to prophecy. Barack Obama is the most anti-Israel president that the U.S. has had since Israel was reborn as a country. Obama may have inherited the recession, but his policies prevented a recovery and, with his reelection, will lead to an economic lost decade. While he is in office, he is rolling back American power abroad. The Obama Administration seems to fit perfectly with the theory that America will cease to be Israel’s ally or will cease to a military and diplomatic power. A blog, “Why is this Happening?” on Feb. 28, 2009, describes this in more detail.

Along with the decline of America, the construction of a new Jewish temple in Israel is also required before the events of Revelation can be fulfilled. The aftermath of the War of Gog of Magog might pave the way for the rebuilding of the temple. The Temple Mount is now occupied by the Islamic Dome of the Rock mosque. The Israeli government protects the mosque from Jews who would like to clear the mountain and rebuild the temple. For the Jews to destroy the mosque would undoubtedly spark a major war. However, if the mosque were destroyed in the Magog war, it would be easy for the Jewish temple to be built on its site.

A chance meeting led to more understanding about the Jewish temple. In 2010, while traveling home from work on an airline, I met a Jewish woman in the Newark airport. We were eating lunch and I had been at a table by myself. There were no other open tables so she asked to sit at mine. I rarely strike up conversations in airports, but we started talking.

Somehow, the conversation turned to a blog that I had written a few weeks earlier, “the Khazar conspiracy.” This post was inspired by some Ron Paul supporters who espoused the theory that modern Israelis were not Jews. Instead, they claimed that they were Khazars, descendents of an ancient Eastern European nation that had converted to Judaism over a thousand years ago. This theory was easily disproved by modern genetic studies which verified that Jews who migrated to Europe remained genetically distinct from their host populations and that they had originated in the Middle East. Written two years ago, the Khazar article remains one of the most read articles on my blog.

The woman mentioned the Cohen gene, something that I had never of. Upon investigation, I learned that the Cohen gene was a genetic marker that identified the priestly line of Aaron. Not only had God kept his chosen people separate from the gentiles after a Diaspora lasting 2,500 years, he had kept the family of priests separate from Jewish laity. When the Jewish temple is rebuilt, it will be simple for the new priests to be identified from the Aaronic line.

In the years of the first Obama Administration, I saw many signs that my worldview was correct. There began a movement among the Russians and Chinese to replace the dollar with a new world currency. I became more aware of the apocalyptic nature of the Iranian government. In 2011, the Iranians even released a film that said that the arrival of the Mahdi, a Shia Islam version of the Messiah, was imminent. The Arab Spring uprisings swept radical Islamists into power in many Arab countries and destabilized others, a development that prominent Israeli rabbis said may signal the coming of the Messiah. In America, there was apostasy in the church and unprecedented attacks on freedom of religion and the freedom of speech of religious believers. For the first time, voters approved same-sex marriage laws and President Obama publicly pushed “marriage equality.”

As the 2012 election approached, I felt that President Obama would surely be turned out of office. Reelecting him would be like reelecting Jimmy Carter or Herbert Hoover (although Americans did elect Franklin Roosevelt, a similarly disastrous president, to an unprecedented three terms). I felt that if Obama won the election that it would almost have to represent God moving his plan for America’s judgment forward. In September 2012, I wrote “the Biblical prophecy case for Obama’s second term,” which described how Obama might have to remain in office in order for prophecies regarding Israel to be fulfilled.

In the weeks leading up to the election, I felt certain that Mitt Romney would win after his strong performance in the debates and President Obama’s obfuscations in the wake of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. In the end, less than a week before the election, Hurricane Sandy ravaged the east coast from Washington, D.C. to New York City. Obama’s performance in the wake of the storm, particularly his bipartisan appearances with New Jersey governor Chris Christie, shifted the polls enough to allow Obama to eke out a victory. In any case, the reelection of Obama represented a rejection of Christian principles and teachings by a majority of Americans.

It seemed that the path of the storm may have represented divine intervention. In Parade magazine, Marilyn Vos Savant explained the unusual confluence of factors that steered Sandy toward New York: “On Sandy’s way north, it ran into a vast high-pressure system over Canada, which prevented it from continuing in that direction, as hurricanes normally do, and forced it to turn west. Then, because it traveled about 300 miles over open water before making landfall, it piled up an unusually large storm surge. An infrequent jet-stream reversal helped maintain and fuel the storm. As if all that weren’t bad enough, a full moon was occurring, so the moon, the earth, and the sun were in a straight line, increasing the moon’s and sun’s gravitational effects on the tides, thus lifting the high tide even higher. Add to this that the wind and water, though not quite at hurricane levels, struck an area rarely hit by storms of this magnitude so the structures were more vulnerable and a disaster occurred.”

While researching my article on Hurricane Sandy, “’Divine wind’ swept Obama to second term,” I was led to my most recent revelation. I discovered “the Harbinger” by Jonathan Cahn. I was honored to have Cahn respond to several questions that I had emailed him while working on a review of his book.

While I had suspected that America was on the verge of divine judgment, Cahn’s book pointed to specifics. Cahn found hidden but precise parallels between the fall of ancient Israel and the calamities that have befallen America since 2001. In addition to the removal of divine protection that led to the September 11 attacks, the U.S. underwent two financial crashes that occurred on the same day of the Hebrew calendar, a day that called for the cancellation of debts according to Jewish law. American politicians had uttered exactly the same words of defiance to God’s judgment that the ancient Israelites had proclaimed. The American response to the 9/11 attacks led directly to the financial crash, a relationship that even secular observers have noted.

I have come to realize that the Bible is more than life’s instruction book. It is the story of Israel, God’s chosen people. It contains their history and their future. The Bible is, among other things, the story of Israel’s rejection of God and ultimate restoration. It was not until Israel rejected the Messiah that God extended the offer of repentance and salvation to the gentile world.

For that story to be complete, the U.S. must undergo radical changes. It is likely that these changes will happen soon or are already occurring. The process began when Israel was reconstituted as a nation in 1948. In his Mount Olivet discourse, Jesus spoke of a blooming fig tree that is widely believed to refer to a reborn Israel. Jesus says that the generation that sees “these things” will “not pass away” until the end-time events he describes have happened. Obviously this means that the America must cease to be a powerful ally of Israel first.

America may cease to be an ally of Israel as pro-Muslim politicians like Barack Obama become increasingly powerful. It might cease to be powerful. The growth of government and the federal debt might strangle the economy to the point where the U.S. cannot support a standing army of sufficient size to protect its interests and allies around the world. This is already happening to many European nations.

A more catastrophic scenario, and one that I fear may come to pass, is that the U.S. might suffer a military defeat. A “nuclear 9/11” could destroy the American economy. A nuclear attack with an electromagnetic pulse weapon could wipe out the entire American electrical grid and cause mass starvation. Such an attack might be a prelude to a second wave of nuclear strikes or conventional attacks.

Interpretation of prophecy is not a certain thing. Often the realization that a prophecy has been fulfilled can only take place in hindsight. The prudent thing to do is to be prepared. Even if there is no large scale disaster from an EMP attack, we are still subject to local disasters from hurricanes, tornados, floods, riots or even a small scale terrorist attack. The experience of the L.A. riots, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy underscore the importance of preparedness and being able to fend for yourself for at least a little while.

No one can say exactly what lies ahead for America. What can be said with certainty is that if America continues down its current path it will not only face economic stagnation, but it is increasingly likely that there will be more examples of divine “shakings” and judgment. We should all be prepared for disasters and be ready to protect ourselves in an emergency. We should also be spiritually prepared. As Jonathan Cahn told me, “The time to repent, to be saved, and to get right with God . . . is now.

'Divine wind' swept Obama to second term

In the thirteenth century, two Mongol fleets under Kublai Khan attacked Japan.  On both occasions, the Mongol invasion fleets were ultimately destroyed by timely typhoons that the Japanese came to know as kamikaze or “divine wind.”  The Japanese believed that the storms were summoned by the gods to protect their homeland.  Hundreds of years later, during WWII, the term kamikaze was adopted by the Imperial Japanese government to describe suicide pilots who crashed their planes into American ships.

Now it is possible that another divine wind has again changed the course of history.  According to an Examiner analysis of exit poll data from the 2012 presidential election, Hurricane Sandy played a crucial role in the election.  In the days after the final debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, polls showed a slight Romney lead with the president polling below 50 percent in most swing states.  Then, on October 29-30, Hurricane Sandy struck the Mid-Atlantic States, causing flooding and heavy damage from Washington, D.C. to New York City.

In the wake of the hurricane, polling data from both Rasmussen and Gallup showed a bump for the president.  Many observers attribute this to the perception of bipartisanship and leadership that Obama received as he toured storm damaged areas of New Jersey with Republican Governor Chris Christie.  The bump eventually moved the needle in the swing states enough to give Obama slim victories in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and other crucial states.  Examiner’s analysis of exit polling showed that 64 percent of voters said that the president’s response to the hurricane was a factor in their vote and 62 percent of these voters chose Obama.

It is interesting to consider the possibility of whether Hurricane Sandy was a divinely directed storm.  In Biblical history, God’s use of natural phenomena to change the course of human events is well established from the flood of Noah to Moses parting the sea.  Even in U.S. history, there have been instances of divine intervention.  One such case was the Battle of Long Island in the Revolutionary War in which George Washington and the Continental Army were saved from British annihilation by a miraculous fog.  More direct divine intervention has been cited in the U.S. victory at Midway in WWII.

If Hurricane Sandy did represent God’s intervention in the American electoral process, what would the Almighty have hoped to gain by influencing Americans to vote for Barack Obama?  Was it a divine rejection of the Republican Party and its ideals or something else?  Could a second Obama term be a blessing for the country or a curse?

Some clues can be found in recent events.  A Boston art exhibit recently made news when a painting depicting the president as Christ-like figure with a crown of thorns in a pose that mimicked the crucifixion was displayed at a public gallery.  Entertainer Jamie Foxx recently referred to Obama as “our lord and savior, Barack Obama” at the Soul Train Awards.  Before the election at the Democratic National Convention, a motion to add a reference to God to the Democratic platform was almost rejected.  The delegates had to be polled three times before the chairman deemed the motion to have passed by a very close voice vote.  In the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), God says, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

The state of the United States in general also indicates a country in rebellion against God.  For example, 54 million babies have been legally killed in the United States since the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was a constitutionally protected right in 1973 according to an estimate by the American Life League.  Under President Obama’s health care reform law, abortion will be funded by tax dollars in spite of the president’s promises to contrary according to an analysis by the American Center for Law and Justice.  The United States has moved from tacit acceptance of abortion to official government approval and subsidies.

More recently, the movement to force acceptance of same-sex marriage has gained steam as well.  President Obama became the first president to openly endorse government recognition of same-sex marriage in spite of his professed Christianity and the numerous religious and secular objections to redefining marriage.  In Charisma magazine, Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said that President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage is tantamount to “shaking his fist in God’s face.”

Many have used the decline of heterosexual marriage in America to justify acceptance of same-sex marriage.  Married couples now make up less than half of U.S. households according to the Economist.  The magazine calls marriage “a luxury for educated and affluent.”  Government entitlement programs have long had the effect of discouraging marriage.  As a result, fewer poor people marry even though there is a very strong correlation between marriage and financial stability.  The assault on marriage was taken to its logical conclusion in President Obama’s “Julia” ad from 2012 in which the government became a substitute for a husband.

The Obama Administration has also spearheaded an assault on religious freedom.  The attacks on religious freedom often involve religious opposition to abortion or same-sex marriage and free speech issues.  Health care workers are compelled to perform abortions.  Military chaplains are performing same-sex marriages in military chapels in violation of the Defense of Marriage Act.  Additionally, Obamacare mandates that all Americans purchase coverage for contraceptive and abortifacient drugs, even if they don’t want them or are morally opposed to them.  The Obama Administration went so far as to have the maker of a controversial anti-Islam film arrested and asked Google to remove the film from Youtube.

Chai Feldblum, Obama’s head of the EEOC, has openly said that religious freedom is a lower priority than sexual freedom.  Quoted in a 2010 Examiner article, she said, “I'm having a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win.  Sexual liberty should win in most cases. There can be a conflict between religious liberty and sexual liberty, but in almost all cases the sexual liberty should win because that's the only way that the dignity of gay people can be affirmed in any realistic manner.”

Abroad, the president’s Israel policy is the most hostile of any American president.  The United States and Israel have historically had a close relationship.  The U.S. was the first country to recognize the new nation of Israel in 1947.  America has long supplied the Jewish state with military assistance, including vital supplies that helped Israel survive the Yom Kippur War in 1973.  The U.S. has often been Israel’s only friend in the United Nations when Arab countries and their allies often try to pass resolutions condemning Israel while all but ignoring Arab terrorist attacks against Israelis.

In 2011, President Obama became the first president to ask that Israel return to pre-1967 borders.  Such a move would require Israel to evacuate its capitol of Jerusalem and return large swaths of land to the Arabs, leaving the remainder of the country indefensible.  One of Obama’s earliest diplomatic moves in 2009 was to request a unilateral freeze on Israeli settlement of the West Bank.  In the months prior to the 2012 election, Obama declined to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he came to the U.S.

The Obama Administration has also reportedly restrained Israel from attacking nuclear weapons facilities in Iran.  Iranian nuclear weapons threaten not only Israel, but the U.S. as well.  Since the election, President Obama announced opposition to new sanctions on Iran that received unanimous and bipartisan support in the Democratic-controlled senate.

Considering that the United States is outside of God’s will, it is possible that God used Hurricane Sandy to set the stage for divine judgment.  In fact, divine judgment on the United States may have begun long before Hurricane Sandy.

Some idea of judgment can be obtained from Romans 1:18-32 in which God “gave over” a sinful and rebellious society “to a depraved mind.”  Paul writes that the effect of this depraved mind is that “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.”  One aspect of divine judgment is social decay that results from turning away from God’s principles and commandments.  As society becomes more depraved, the societal costs of social diseases, crime, welfare, greed and corruption increase, placing an ever greater strain on the nation as a whole.

Other aspects of divine judgment can be seen from the ancient Israelite history in the Old Testament.  Ancient Israel and Judah were divinely established nations.  God had promised Abraham that he would “make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Gen 12:2-3).

When the kingdoms of Israel and Judah were established in Canaan hundreds of years later, their history followed a pattern of prosperity, rebellion and judgment.  When times were good, the people of Israel would reject God’s commandments and face judgment in the form of internal strife, wicked leaders, national decline, and, finally, total defeat and enslavement.  The people assumed that, as the recipients of God’s promise, they were immune to God’s judgment.  They could not fathom that God would use heathen nations like Babylon and Assyria to punish his chosen people.  Many Americans make the same mistake today, even without a specific promise to bless America.

It is likely that America’s judgment will follow the same pattern.  According to USA Today, Munich Re, an insurance company, released a report just prior to Hurricane Sandy that noted that the number of natural disasters is increasing worldwide, but the biggest increases have been in North America.  This includes hurricanes like Sandy and Katrina, tornados, fires, droughts, and floods.

America has experienced prosperity and the following bust.  The 2008 real estate crash ushered in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.  Although the recession is technically over, the economy has not recovered.  President Obama’s stimulus spending has set the stage for a debt crisis that could permanently hobble the American economy.

Another possibility is that there may be more terrorist attacks on the scale of the September 11 or larger.  It is not unlikely that the U.S. will be the target of an Iranian nuclear attack, possibly a catastrophic attack using electromagnetic pulse technology.  Such an attack could destroy the majority of the electrical capacity that makes modern American life possible.

Divine judgment of America may be part of God’s grand plan as described by Jesus in the Mount Olivet Discourse, John in the Revelation and various other prophets throughout the Bible.  Many theologians believe that America must decline and fall away to set the stage for the final end-times Battle of Armageddon in which the world aligns against Israel (Rev. 16:16).  This theory was described in a September 2012 article on Examiner.com and a 2009 article on CaptainKudzu.  If Israel is the key to the end-times and the U.S. is the protector of Israel, then the U.S. must be removed from the picture.  This could be through an economic collapse, a military catastrophe, or a combination of disasters.

If the United States is being judged by God, is the future preordained or can we avert a national disaster?  The Bible promises “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chron 7:14).

Last summer, Billy Graham called on Americans to repent, writing on his website “My heart aches for America and its deceived people. The wonderful news is that our Lord is a God of mercy, and He responds to repentance. In Jonah’s day, Nineveh was the lone world superpower—wealthy, unconcerned, and self-centered. When the Prophet Jonah finally traveled to Nineveh and proclaimed God’s warning, people heard and repented.  I believe the same thing can happen once again, this time in our nation.”

As our national debt piles up at an alarming rate and Iran grows closer to a nuclear weapon each day, time may be running out quickly.

Economic Leaders Call for Single World Currency

Over the past month, world economic leaders have begun calling for a new world currency to replace the dollar. The world financial crisis has led to worries about the stability of the dollar, which, in turn, has led other countries to feel the need for a new world reserve currency.

For decades, the dollar has been the standard international currency. Many governments maintain a large reserve of dollars as part of their treasuries, such as the $1 trillion in US government debt and securities held by China. International commodities such as crude oil are bought and sold in dollars and international business is typically conducted in dollars.

President Obama’s attempts to stimulate the economy are leading to massive increases in government spending and federal deficits. Creditor nations such as China worry that the ballooning federal debt will lead to inflation and a devalued dollar, which would have almost the same effect on foreign creditors as if the US defaulted on its debt.

In late March, a United Nations panel released a report which recommended that the world create a new reserve currency based on a hard traded, basket of currencies similar to the old European currency unit (Ecu) or an accounting unit called the Special Drawing Right (SDR). The Ecu and the SDR are weighted combinations of currencies that can be traded in financial markets. The Euro had a similar start as a combination of European currencies.

Prior to the April G20 economic summit, both Russia and China indicated their support for world reserve currency. Arkady Dvorkovich, a Kremlin economic advisor, said that Russia would call for discussions of a “supra-national reserve currency.”

Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of China’s central bank, wrote that a new currency would help “to achieve the objective of safeguarding global economic and financial stability.” He worries that there are “inherent vulnerabilities and systemic risks in the existing international monetary system” based on the dollar. He would like the new currency to be used for international trade, commodities pricing, and accounting, unlike current SDRs, which are only used for government finance.

At one point, US Treasury Secretary appeared to agree with the Chinese proposal, saying, “We’re actually quite open to that.”

Within ten minutes of Geithner’s comment, the value of the dollar started to drop sharply. The Secretary quickly recanted his statement and noted that he had not actually read the Chinese proposal.

President Obama, Secretary Geithner, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke all downplayed the proposals for a new currency. “I don’t believe there is a need for a global currency,” President Obama said. He added “the reason the dollar is strong right now is because investors consider the United States the strongest economy in the world with the most stable political system in the world.”

Nevertheless, just a few days later, the G20 did decide to create $250 billion in special drawing rights for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in what the international financial press described as a “surprising” move. The SDR is an accounting tool used by governments and is not a currency itself, but is made up of a basket of values of four currencies: the dollar, the euro, the British pound sterling, and the Japanese yen. The SDRs would be allocated to governments based on their contributions to the IMF for lending to poorer countries. In essence, SDRs are a form of foreign aid in which wealthy nations borrow to loan money to poor nations.

While the creation of the SDRs is not the creation of a worldwide currency, it seems to be a step toward a global economic system, especially in light of the recent Russian and Chinese proposals. It is also similar to the creation of the euro. The European Community had its roots in the 1951 Treaty of Paris between Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands that created the European Coal and Steel Community. In 1957, the Treaty of Rome between the same nations expanded that cooperation to create the European Economic Community.

It wasn’t until 1979 that the European nations took the next step toward creating a common currency. That year the European Monetary System was created, and, with it, the Ecu, a common currency unit similar to the new SDR.

In 1986, the Single European Act extended the jurisdiction of the European Community to monetary policy. In 1992, the Treaty of Maastricht created the European Union and set a deadline of January 1999 to establish a common currency, as well as a single monetary and economic policy.

In January 1999, the European Union, by then eleven nations, pegged their exchange rates to the euro. At the same time, the euro began to be used for non-cash transactions and accounting. The euro was also used in stock markets and was used on bank statements and corporate bond offerings.

Three years later, in January 2002, the euro went into circulation. A few months later, the old national currencies were phased out.

The creation of the euro was a gradual process that took fifty years. The new Russian and Chinese proposals go beyond the creation of Special Drawing Rights, and may very well eventually lead to the creation of a worldwide version of the euro. There is a possibility that the world financial crisis will accelerate the timetable for the creation of this world currency, especially if the dollar becomes unstable under staggering mountains of US federal debt.

Until recently, the idea of a world currency has been the province of conspiracy theorists and Bible prophecy scholars. It is somewhat shocking to find the idea meeting with widespread acceptance from world leaders.
For many years, theologians have believed that the Biblical Book of Revelation has held an implicit prophecy of a single world currency. Revelation 13:16-17 says “He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.”
The implication here is that the latter day world ruler, the beast or Antichrist, has total control over the world economy and financial system. Scholars believe that, at that point, the entire world economy will be tied together with a single cashless currency system. Using the system requires a mark of loyalty that, when applied to the right hand or forehead, is easily visible.

One possibility, explored in Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind series, is that when the mark is applied, a RFID (radio frequency identification) chip is implanted under the skin. This chip would be tied to the user’s bank and financial accounts, so that when a purchase is made, the transaction would be completed by simply scanning the buyer’s hand or face. Essentially, it would be like having a debit card in your body.

Interestingly, this technology is already available. In 2003, Applied Digital Solutions (now called Digital Angel) announced the development of a system called VeriPay, which used microchips half the size of a grain of sand to identify consumers to ATM machines in lieu of an ATM or debit card. The technology did not catch on, but the company changed its focus to market biochips to pet owners. A chip with an identification number is implanted between the pet’s shoulders. If the animal is found, the chip is scanned and the owner’s information is retrieved from a database. The chips have already been implanted into some humans as well.

A cashless economy based on electronic funds transfers would enable a world leader to exercise unprecedented control over world finances. Without cash, it would be impossible for an underground “black” market to thrive. Similarly, dissidents could find themselves with no access to their financial accounts.

The greater danger for those who participate in the beast’s economy is the loss of their souls. Revelation further indicates (20:4, 11-15) that those who take the beast’s mark, showing allegiance to the Antichrist, will be judged and cast into the lake of fire. The only way to escape this fate is accept Jesus Christ as Lord and believe that He rose from the dead (Romans 10:9).

The creation of a single world currency is most likely still a long way off. Recent events show that many world leaders would like to move in that direction, however. These steps are yet another positive indication that the Bible accurately foretells the future and that it is a reliable source of information from God. We can be assured that its prophecies of the return of Jesus are not only accurate; they are drawing nearer.

NOTE: This may seem like a strange topic for an Easter blog, but if Jesus was able to rise from the dead, then it follows that He will be able to return as He said He would. The signs that He gave to signify His return bear a striking resemblance to today's headlines.

Jesus is risen indeed.

Happy Easter!

Antichrists

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in Biblical end-times prophecies. Among these prophecies are several that refer to a latter-day ruler who will control the world. Although referred to by many names in the Bible, this leader is commonly known as The Antichrist.

Speculation as to the identity of the Antichrist is at a high pitch. Many prominent leaders and politicians have been alleged to be the Antichrist. Recently, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host, Michael Medved, asked for callers’ opinions on whether Barack Obama is a “Lightworker,” an enlightened spiritual being who will help lead us to the next level. To his surprise, most callers instead believed that Obama was the Antichrist. This was based on his charisma, his meteoric rise, and his ability to influence massive audiences to follow him with little more than pretty speeches.

Many people do not know what the Bible actually says about the Antichrist. Does Barack Obama (or Hillary Clinton or George W. Bush, two other popular candidates) actually fit reality?

When people think of the Antichrist, they think of the Book of Revelation. In reality, the word “antichrist” is not found in Revelation at all. The only two verses which refer specifically to the Antichrist are 1 John 2:18 and 4:3. The first verse says that the Antichrist is coming in the “last hour” and will be preceded by other “antichrists.” The second verse says that spirits who do not confess that “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” are the “spirit of the Antichrist,” which is “already in the world.” Other verses in 1 and 2 John refer to antichrists who deny that Jesus is the Christ and the incarnate Son of God (1 John 1:22 and 2 John 1:7).

From these verses, we learn that there is one Antichrist of the last days, but there are also other, smaller, antichrists, who serve the Antichrist. These antichrists are characterized by denying the divinity of Jesus Christ. They are literally against Christ. Their purpose is to deceive people and pave the way for the Antichrist. As the end approaches, we can expect the number of antichrists to increase. Jesus Himself said that we would see “many” who claim to be the Christ in order to deceive as many people as possible (Matthew 24:5, 24-26; Mark 13:6, 21-22; Luke 21:8; John 5:43).

The first detailed reference to the Antichrist is in Daniel 7. In this chapter, Daniel explains a dream of different beasts. The four beasts represent worldwide empires. The first three beasts are widely believed to represent the Egyptians, the Medo-Persians, and the Greeks respectively. The fourth beast represents the Roman Empire (7:23). It’s ten horns represent ten kingdoms (7:24). The little horn represents the Antichrist and its “eyes of a man” represent his intelligence.

The little horn becomes larger than the other horns. The little horn profanes and blasphemes God. He persecutes the saints, the people of God, and even prevails against them at first. His rule will last for “a time, times, and half a time” (7:25). This is understood to mean one year plus two years plus half a year for a total of three and one half years.

A similar passage in Revelation is one of the Bible passages most closely associated with The Antichrist. Beginning in chapter 13, John describes a “Beast from the Sea” that is given power by the Dragon, Satan (Rev. 12:9). This Beast captivates the world and everyone whose name is not in the Book of Life of the Lamb, those who are not Christians, eventually worship him. When they worship the Beast, they are also worshipping Satan. The Beast blasphemes God and makes war on the saints who do not worship him. John says that God grants the Beast 42 months to continue his blasphemies (13:5). This is equal to the three and one half years foretold by Daniel.

The sea in these passages may refer to the gentile nations, that is, nations other than Israel. This may indicate that the Antichrist will arise from the gentile world. The seven heads and ten horns refer to kingdoms. The seven heads refer to monarchies that ruled the known world: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the future kingdom of the Antichrist. The ten horns are kingdoms that make up the Antichrist’s world empire.

In verses 13:3 and 13:12, John alludes to a mortal wound that the Beast will receive. The Antichrist, in an apparent reflection of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, will be healed after having received a mortal wound. Seeing this charismatic leader revived from the dead will undoubtedly inspire many people around the world to worship him as a god.

In the latter half of chapter 13, John describes another beast. The second beast leads the religion that worships the Beast from the Sea. He performs miracles, such as calling down fire from Heaven. This beast is also a deceiver who power is derived from the first beast, who in turn derives his power from Satan. The second beast creates an image of the first Beast for his followers to worship. This image can speak and kill those who refuse to worship it.

Revelation 13:16-18 contains one of the most famous passages of all the Bible’s end-time prophecies. John says that after the first Beast is healed, the second beast will cause all people, rich or poor, to receive a mark on either their right hand or their forehead. Without this mark, no one will be able to buy or sell. This would quickly render opponents of the beastly government destitute. The mark contains either the mark, the number of the beast or his name. John reveals that the number of the beast is 666.

As there has been much speculation on the identity of the Antichrist, there has also been much speculation on the meaning of the number 666. It is very likely that none of the speculative theories about the number are correct and that its meaning will only be clear when God chooses to reveal it. One theory that is most likely correct, as far as it goes, is that the number is a contrast to the number seven, which in the Bible symbolizes perfection and completeness. The number six falls short of perfection, just as man continually falls short of perfection. The repetitive six symbolizes sin and the coming judgment.

The Old Testament prophet Daniel also offered some additional clues about the Antichrist. Daniel 8:23-26 refers to a fierce king who will arise in the “latter time.” He will be mighty by power other than his own. His reign will be characterized by deceit and hostility, not only to the people of God, but also to God, “the Prince of princes,” Himself. In the end, the king will be destroyed as God intervenes.

In the next chapter, Daniel says that “the people of the prince who is to come,” the Antichrist, will destroy the city, Jerusalem, and the sanctuary, the Jewish Temple (9:26). This occurred when the Romans under Titus razed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70. Therefore, Daniel indicated that the future Antichrist would be a descendant of the Romans.

Daniel goes on to say in verse 27 that the Antichrist will make a treaty (covenant) with Israel (the many) for one week. In this passage, the word “week” is commonly understood to mean seven years. The treaty will be broken in the “middle of the week” or three and one half years later.

Daniel alludes to the Antichrist again in 11:36-45. This passage follows up a detailed prophecy that was fulfilled by Antiochus Epiphanes, a Roman ruler of Palestine. Antiochus was a prototype of the Antichrist who defiled the Jewish Temple by placing a statue of the Roman god, Jupiter, upon the altar. Daniel tells us that the king will not only blaspheme, but will place himself above God. The passage also refers to an end-time battle mixed with some details of campaigns of Antiochus. The king will enter Israel, the “Glorious Land,” and will camp between the Dead Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The Apostle Paul also addressed the Antichrist in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12. Paul refers to him as the “man of sin,” “the lawless one,“ and the “son of perdition.” Paul reiterates the claim that the Antichrist will exalt himself above God and defile God’s Temple. Paul also confirms that the Antichrist’s power is from Satan.

Paul also tells us that even though the spirit of lawlessness is already at work, the man of sin will not be revealed as long as God restrains him. When God’s restraining influence is removed, the man of sin will come to deceive those who reject the truth of Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Those who accept the lie rather than the truth will be condemned.

The Apostle John echoes other Biblical claims that the Antichrist, as well as many antichrists, are coming (1 John 2:18, 22). Paul states that a way to know antichrists is through their denial of Jesus Christ and his status as the Son of God the Father. He stresses this warning yet again in 1 John 4:3 where he states, “Every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” A similar warning is given in 2 John 1:7.

After examining what the Bible says about the Antichrist, we can draw several conclusions. The first is that the Bible does not give enough clues to identify the Antichrist before he takes the world stage. The Bible says very little about his background or identity and then speaks only in very general terms. We can assume that the Antichrist will not be conclusively identified until he assumes the mantle of world ruler and begins fulfilling prophecy. The identity of the Antichrist will become increasingly obvious as prophetic events unfold.

A second conclusion is that while the Antichrist has not been conclusively shown to be physically on the world stage at the present time, the spirit of the Antichrist has been in the world since shortly after the time of Christ. The spirit of the Antichrist came into the world to deceive and deny the deity of Jesus Christ. The spirit of the Antichrist is obviously Satan and his minions. These satanic and demonic spirits gain when people are deceived and do not accept salvation through Christ.

Additionally, there are numerous warnings in the Bible that there are a multitude of antichrists who also deceive and deny. These antichrists might work through influential politicians, leaders, writers, filmmakers, and celebrities, among others, who deny the deity of Christ and are instrumental in causing others to be deceived as to the true nature of Jesus Christ. These lesser antichrists have also been hard at work in the world since the resurrection of Christ and will probably contribute to the “falling away” that precedes the arrival of the Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Finally, and most importantly, we can be assured that the Antichrist and antichrists will roam free only as long as God allows them. The Antichrist will not burst onto the scene until God removes his restraining influence (2 Thess. 2:7). When he does arrive, he will only rule for his appointed time (Revelation 13: 5, Daniel 7:25) and will then be judged by God. The end of the story is that the Antichrist and his false prophet will be captured by Christ’s heavenly forces after their satanic army is routed after the Battle of Armageddon. Their punishment is to be dropped into the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20). Satan, the spirit of the Antichrist, is first bound and thrown into bottomless pit for a thousand years (Rev. 20:2-3). After his release, Satan will lead another failed rebellion against God, after which, he too, will be condemned to the lake of fire (Rev. 20:7-10).

Followers of Christ should not fear the Antichrist. Instead, we should study the Bible so that we will not be deceived by the numerous antichrists who roam the world. Paul points out that the word of God is the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17), a potent defensive weapon against deceit, as well as an offensive weapon with which to wage war against the spirit of the Antichrist.
