Joe Biden Is Officially In The Race

After months of speculation, Joe Biden’s candidacy has become official. The former vice president kicked off his campaign in a video released early this morning.
Biden called the 2020 campaign a “battle for the soul of this nation,” adding, “I believe history will look back on four years of this president and all he embraces as an aberrant moment in time. But if we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation — who we are — and I cannot stand by and watch that happen.”
Over the past several months, Biden has led other Democrats in primary polling even without a formal candidacy. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders seems to be his only serious rival. Biden also leads President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate, in head-to-head polling.
All eyes will be on Biden’s fundraising following his announcement. Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke had impressive hauls in their first 24 hours. An early metric of Biden’s support will be whether he can match them.
NPR reports that one of Biden’s first events will be in Pittsburgh next week. The stop in Pennsylvania indicates his intent to recover ground in the Rust Belt lost by Hillary Clinton in 2016.
